Daniel Kinahan to appear via video link at Ireland’s Special Criminal Court
Daniel Kinahan will attend his hearing before the Special Criminal Court by video link from Portlaoise Prison.
Daniel Kinahan, accused of leading an organised crime syndicate from October 2015 to April 2017, is scheduled to participate in his case before the Special Criminal Court by video link from Portlaoise Prison on Monday. The charge, under section 71a of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, stems from an extradition that made him the first Irish citizen sent from the UAE under a new treaty. At his initial appearance on 9 August, he had no legal representation and claimed a family member would arrange it.
The court will hear from the Director of Public Prosecutions’ lawyers about the evidence dossier and will decide if Kinahan has hired private counsel or will apply for criminal legal aid, which requires a means statement. Sources indicate he previously preferred an in-person appearance but later chose the video link.
Why it matters
The hearing will decide representation for a high-profile organized-crime case, impacting Ireland's fight against transnational gangs.
