Danish court set to announce verdict in DF leaders' libel dispute

A court in Frederiksberg will deliver its decision on a libel case between Danish People's Party leader Morten Messerschmidt and MP Martin Lidegaard.

During a pre-election debate in Randers, Martin Lidegaard cited a Weekendavisen interview with Danish People's Party leader Morten Messerschmidt, prompting Messerschmidt to demand a retraction and later file a libel suit over the phrase “skin colour.” The August hearing was historic as the first time two serving MPs, each leading a party, have been adversaries in a courtroom. Earlier precedents, such as Pia Kjærsgaard’s case against Karen Sunds, expanded the legal boundaries for political speech.

Professor Vagn Greve noted the shift toward broader free expression and reduced personal protection. Lawyers for Lidegaard argue his statements are covered by extensive political free speech. The court will issue its ruling on Friday at 12:45 p.m. in Frederiksberg, with no in-person appearance required.

Why it matters

The decision will clarify the limits of political speech and libel protection in Denmark.
