DAP leaders urge MCA to quit BN and run under its own banner

DAP MP Chong Zhemin and youth secretary Lim Chun Weng called on MCA to leave the Barisan Nasional coalition and contest the Malacca state election using the party’s own logo.

In a public statement, Kampar MP Chong Zhemin criticised MCA’s marginalisation within Barisan Nasional, pointing to a recent seat allocation that bypassed the party. He questioned MCA’s influence, noting that UMNO decides seat distribution while MCA merely accepts the outcome. DAP youth secretary Lim Chun Weng echoed the sentiment, urging MCA to field candidates under its own symbol in the Malacca state election rather than the BN logo, which he described as a political performance for sympathy votes.

The remarks came after MCA president Wee Ka Siong left a BN gathering in Melaka, where UMNO unveiled its slate for the November 14 state polls. BN announced 21 candidates, featuring MCA figures Lim Ban Hong and Ngwe Hee Sem contesting the traditional MCA seats of Kelebang and Machap Jaya. Both DAP leaders suggested that if MCA truly feels disrespected, it should cease relying on the BN emblem and assert its independence.

Why it matters

The challenge highlights growing tensions within Malaysia's ruling coalition and could reshape party alliances ahead of elections.
