DARPA seeks breakthrough hypersonic cruise missile with far greater range and speed

DARPA has issued a request for information on a next-generation hypersonic cruise missile that would dramatically improve range, velocity, altitude and survivability.

DARPA released a request for information to explore concepts for a Next Generation Hypersonic Cruise Missile (NGHCM) that would surpass current hypersonic designs. The effort seeks a demonstrator capable of sustained flight above Mach 5 using an air-breathing scramjet, with markedly greater range, speed, altitude and maneuverability. Survivability against sophisticated enemy sensors and interceptors is a core requirement, as is a reduced signature to improve penetration of contested air-defence environments.

The agency is open to various launch configurations, including internal or external carriage on fighters, bomber deployment, ground launchers or palletised systems. Cost-effectiveness and the ability to produce the weapon in large numbers are highlighted to avoid the expense and complexity of existing hypersonic projects. DARPA also invites innovative testing and evaluation approaches, indicating the program’s scope extends beyond the missile itself. The initiative arrives as the United States continues to field other hypersonic programs such as the Air Force’s HACM, the Army’s Dark Eagle and the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike.
