Darwin man's jail term for wife's stabbing death doubled on appeal
A Darwin man’s four-year sentence for the negligent manslaughter of his wife was increased to eight years after an appeal.
Dennis Naroldol, 60, had pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter for stabbing his wife outside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on the Darwin esplanade in 2023. He became eligible for parole in April, but prosecutors argued the original term was insufficient. The Northern Territory Court of Criminal Appeal agreed and doubled the sentence to eight years. Naroldol can now seek early release in late 2027.
Why it matters
The appeal shows how courts can adjust sentences when initial penalties are deemed insufficient.
