DC Election Board orders National Guard to stay away from voting drop boxes
The District of Columbia Board of Elections asked the National Guard to refrain from positioning soldiers near ballot drop boxes after a video showed guards standing beside an unused box.
After a left-leaning X account shared footage of two National Guard soldiers standing beside a ballot drop box before the boxes were opened, the District of Columbia Board of Elections instructed the Guard to avoid positioning personnel near voting drop boxes and other election sites. Board spokeswoman Sarah Graham said the board is directly addressing the issue with the Guard and has asked for restrictions on troop placement.
A Guard spokesperson confirmed awareness of the circulating video and said the matter is being handled. The Guard’s presence in the capital began under President Donald Trump in August 2025 to combat crime and was extended through 2029, with officials citing a roughly 24% drop in crime according to a Niskanen Center study. Critics, however, point to the deployment’s estimated $3 million-per-day cost. The controversy highlights ongoing partisan debate over the optics and implications of military forces at civilian voting locations.
