DC police officer dies after apparent self-inflicted shooting at precinct

A Metropolitan Police Department officer died early Monday after a gunshot wound, believed to be self-inflicted, at the Second District station.

In the early hours of Monday, a Metropolitan Police Department officer was shot inside the Second District station, located close to the Washington National Cathedral. The wound appears to have been self-inflicted, according to a preliminary statement from the department, and no indication of a third-party involvement has emerged. The officer was rushed to George Washington University Hospital but died en route from critical injuries.

Authorities have not released the officer’s name or further specifics about the incident. The MPD Internal Affairs Bureau has opened an investigation into the fatal shooting. No additional information has been provided at this time.
