DCA flights to be halted for three hours during Freedom 250 Grand Prix

Federal aviation officials confirmed that all aircraft operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport will be suspended for three hours on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. to facilitate the Freedom 250 Grand Prix flyovers. The pause is part of broader traffic-management measures coordinated with stakeholders for the two-day, free INDYCAR race that will trace a 1.7-mile circuit in front of the U.S. Capitol and along the National Mall.

Race organizer Bud Denker projected attendance in the hundreds of thousands, with 266,000 tickets already issued. Washington is already implementing extensive road closures and parking restrictions, and D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll noted the expanding impact. Mayor Muriel Bowser urged residents to avoid downtown driving, while WMATA General Manager Randy Clarke warned of significant bus detours. Travelers should check with airlines for any changes to the flight pause.
