Deadly prison fire and riot erupt in Kurdish-controlled town of Kobani

A violent incident involving a fire and a riot occurred at the prison in Kobani, a mainly Kurdish town in northern Syria, resulting in at least seven fatalities, according to the state news agency. The unrest followed escalating tensions between Kurdish and Arab communities in the town the day before. Although Syrian government forces have recently moved into the border area with Turkey, the detention center continues to be operated by Kurdish fighters.

Monitors from the Syria-based Observatory for Human Rights attributed the flare-up to authorities' proposal to transfer certain prisoners to a prison in Aleppo. Kobani, once besieged by the Islamic State, later served as a launch point for a U.S.-backed Kurdish campaign that pushed the militants out of their last stronghold in 2019. Recent political moves aim to bring the northeast under Damascus' authority, while the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces announced their dissolution in late August.
