Death toll climbs to 16 after rain-triggered landslides in Jiangxi province
Search teams have recovered another victim in Jiangxi, raising the landslide death count there to 16, officials said.
Intense rainfall after Typhoon Saudel struck China's east coast led to a series of landslides in Suichuan County, Jiangxi. Search crews have now found a further body, increasing the province's death total to 16, with the casualties occurring in Gaoping, Zuo'an and Tanghu towns. State media reported that over 18,000 people have been moved to safety in the county.
The mudslide in Gaoping alone accounted for 13 of the deaths. In the adjacent Hunan province, two more people were killed by storm-related hazards, as reported earlier. The typhoon made landfall twice in Zhejiang and later as a tropical storm in Fujian, bringing the heavy rains that triggered the disasters.
