Death toll from Valencia's October 2024 floods rises to 233 after new victim added

In the ongoing criminal investigation of the October 2024 Valencia flood disaster, Judge Nuria Ruiz has updated the official death toll to 233, marking the third increase in two months. The newest victim, a Catarroja resident, fell after floodwater broke through her front door, sustaining a subdural haematoma that led to an intracranial haemorrhage. Hospital staff withdrew her anticoagulant medication, intended to prevent further bleeding, but a week later she suffered an ischemic stroke and died on November 28.

The judge concluded that the medication change heightened the risk of cerebral embolism, directly causing the stroke. Prior revisions added a man who died of a heart attack on the flood day in Benetusser and a Guadassuar resident who died from lack of oxygen after a power outage. The case continues to assess the chain of responsibility for the disaster’s fatalities.
