Debate ignites over scrapping energy-saving certificates to curb fuel prices
Lawmakers are considering eliminating the Certificats d’économie d’énergie (CEE) as a way to lower gasoline, gas and electricity costs for French households.
Amid record fuel prices and soaring utility bills, politicians propose ending the CEE scheme, which obliges energy firms such as EDF, Engie and TotalEnergies to fund home-renovation projects. Critics argue the program adds roughly 4 % to household energy bills, according to a Cour des comptes report from September 2024. The suggested repeal follows other measures like tax cuts and price caps aimed at protecting consumer purchasing power.
