Debate reignites over Tisza Party poll methodology and its political impact

The release of a Tisza Party-commissioned opinion poll has sparked renewed controversy, with political scientist Török Gábor questioning its relevance and the poll’s details remaining opaque.

A new opinion poll ordered by the Tisza Party has reignited a dispute over the transparency of partisan polling in Hungary. Political analyst Török Gábor warned on Facebook that even this governmental cycle will see parties releasing their own survey results, suggesting the timing benefits Fidesz. Magyar Péter echoed the poll’s findings on his social media, noting a recent increase in the margin between Tisza and Fidesz, yet he did not specify the poll’s category, sample size, or the firm that conducted it.

Medián responded that publishing poll results obliges researchers to list the survey date, sample size, methodology and the polling company, as required by professional ethics. Previously, Medián’s own September survey for one outlet indicated that a majority of the population expressed support for the Tisza Party, while Fidesz and Mi Hazánk attracted smaller portions of the vote. The 21 Kutatóközpont later released its data, showing a decline in Tisza’s support among committed voters compared with earlier months, while Fidesz’s numbers rose slightly.

Why it matters

The controversy highlights how undisclosed polling methods can shape public perception and political competition.
