Debian Marks 33 Years While Haiku Celebrates 25, Both Show Ongoing Development

The Debian project turned 33, highlighting its continued relevance, while the Haiku OS community marked 25 years with new beta milestones.

Debian commemorated 33 years of operation, tracing its roots to Ian Murdock’s 1993 launch when the Linux kernel was less than two years old, and noting its status as one of the most widely used Linux distributions. Recent milestones include the releases of Debian 12 in 2023 and Debian 13 a year ago, underscoring its steady growth. The Haiku OS project observed its 25th anniversary, recalling the 2001 OpenBeOS start after Palm’s acquisition of Be, and announced a potential beta6 version slated for mid-August, with ongoing PowerPC and Arm64 port efforts.

The community also highlighted related initiatives such as the Cosmoe toolkit, now building on Linux, Windows and macOS, and VitruvianOS, which aims to run a Be-like desktop on a Linux kernel. Together, these developments illustrate the enduring influence of both the Debian and Haiku ecosystems in the broader open-source landscape.
