Decapitated body of Rwandan dissident discovered near Kampala

Police found the headless corpse of former Rwandan sergeant Robert Kabera close to Kampala, where he had been a vocal opponent of President Paul Kagame.

A police spokesperson announced that the dismembered body of Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan sergeant now living in Uganda, was found near the capital city of Kampala. Kabera, who left Rwanda several years ago, had turned into a prominent critic of President Paul Kagame and used his YouTube channel “Major Robert TV” to voice opposition, amassing more than 144,000 subscribers. Among his content was a song that lauded opposition figure Victoire Ingabire, a frequently imprisoned dissenting voice in Rwanda.

The gruesome find fuels longstanding allegations that the Rwandan government eliminates critics beyond its borders. Officials have not provided further information about the circumstances or any suspects. The case underscores tensions between Rwanda and exiled opponents residing in neighboring countries.

Why it matters

The killing highlights risks faced by exiled Rwandan dissidents and raises concerns about cross-border political repression.
