Defendant in Dresden Antifa trial dies after suicide attempt, lawyer blames court

Henry A., a defendant in the Dresden Antifa Ost trial, died following a suicide attempt while in custody, and his lawyer accuses the court of neglect.

Henry A., charged in the second major trial against alleged members of the Antifa Ost group, died after a suicide attempt that resulted in a coma and subsequent death. His attorney, Felix Isensee, contends that the court ignored its custodial care obligations, rejecting several motions to detach his client from the case despite clear signs of a psychiatric emergency. The defendant had been transferred directly from a locked psychiatric ward to the courtroom and was under heavy sedation during his final hearing.

Earlier in the proceedings, the defense’s request for a three-month trial pause, recommended by his doctor, was also denied. The case itself involves accusations of violent attacks on neo-Nazi individuals, and the defendant had a history of confrontations with Saxon authorities dating back to the 2010s.

Why it matters

The death raises concerns about mental-health safeguards and judicial responsibility in high-profile criminal trials.
