Pete Hegseth, the 46-year-old defense secretary, issued a directive for commanders to propose soldiers who satisfy rigorous physical and appearance criteria for his upcoming State of the Force address. Candidates must clear the Army’s fitness test, adhere to a waist-to-height ratio benchmark of 0.55, and maintain impeccable grooming, including being clean-shaven. Selection will also consider demonstrated leadership, professional character and a spotless service record.

Those selected will join the speech audience and receive a chance to exercise with Hegseth, who has previously labeled overweight officers and facial hair as unacceptable. His grooming standards have already prompted stricter Navy enforcement after a June incident. This year’s audience expands beyond senior generals to include lower-ranking officials and enlisted personnel.
