Deficient monsoon threatens Rajasthan's 2026 kharif harvest, especially bajra and guar

A senior Agriculture department official warned that weak monsoon rains will likely reduce Rajasthan's kharif crop output in 2026, with bajra, moong and guar expected to fall while groundnut may rise slightly.

According to a senior official in Rajasthan's Agriculture department, the 2026 kharif season faces a downturn because of deficient monsoon rains. Production estimates indicate lower yields for bajra, moong and guar, while groundnut output is expected to improve modestly over last year. The department cited sowing areas and projected tonnages, noting that final numbers will be confirmed once crops reach the mandis.

Guar trader Ramotar Khandelwal highlighted that half of the state suffered a severe rainfall shortfall, particularly in the western region, curbing sowing and driving early price spikes. Agriculture and allied activities account for about 27 % of the state's GDP, prompting the government to roll out new schemes, including AI-based initiatives, to boost the sector. The outlook underscores the vulnerability of Rajasthan's agriculture to climate variability.

Why it matters

Rajasthan's crop decline could affect food supply and the state's economy, which relies heavily on agriculture.
