According to police, Singh stepped out to dispose of waste, confronted a noisy group at an opposite eatery, was pursued from the ground floor to the third floor and assaulted in view of his 20-year-old son. He was taken unconscious to Holy Family Hospital around 12.25 am and died at 6.32 am; the autopsy showed haemorrhagic shock from blunt-force injuries, multiple abrasions, rib fractures and a spleen laceration.
