Delhi High Court postpones order to stop OpenAI scraping ANI news content

In a division-bench hearing, the Delhi High Court declined to grant an immediate restraining order against OpenAI's use of news agency ANI's content to train its ChatGPT system. Justices Avneesh Jhingan and Manmeet PS Arora said they would not rule ex-parte without hearing the other side. The decision follows a July 24 order by a single judge that rejected ANI's petition, finding the AI company's activity falls within the statutory fair-dealing provision.

ANI argued that OpenAI had admitted to scraping, storing, and commercially exploiting its work, infringing its copyright rights. The agency also highlighted that the earlier injunction had been limited to a period from September 2024 to July 24. The court has now issued a notice in ANI's appeal and scheduled the next hearing for December 5.
