Delhi-Meerut RRTS to run on 110 MW solar plant, covering about 60% of its power
The Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor will be powered by a 110 MW solar plant costing Rs 450 crore, expected to supply roughly 60% of its electricity.
India’s Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System, launched in 2023 and linking Delhi with Meerut in under an hour, is adding a renewable-energy component. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation entered a power-purchase agreement with NIRL NCRTC Renewables Limited to develop a 110 MW solar plant in Jaulan, Uttar Pradesh, financed on an 80:20 debt-equity basis at an estimated Rs 450 crore. The facility is projected to provide nearly 60% of the corridor’s electricity, lowering annual power expenses by about 25% and averting roughly 1.8 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
Electricity will be sold to NCRTC at a fixed rate for 25 years and transmitted via the Uttar Pradesh grid to substations in both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Officials describe the scheme as a first-of-its-kind benchmark for integrating solar power into India’s RRTS and metro networks, supporting cleaner urban mobility.
Why it matters
