Delhi Metro Maintains Over 85% Service Amid Protest Disruptions

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation told the Supreme Court that more than 85% of its network stayed fully operational during the recent protests, with entry and exit limited at only 45 stations.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation submitted a compliance affidavit to the Supreme Court, stating that over 85% of its 303-station network remained fully functional during the October 10, 2026 protests. Only 45 stations experienced entry-exit restrictions, a measure taken in line with law-enforcement assessments. The corporation noted that ridership dropped to roughly 32 lakh passengers on the protest day, versus the normal 58 lakh for a typical second Saturday.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, had earlier directed the Centre to avoid a total ban on metro services and asked the DMRC to report back. The protests were called by the Cockroach Janta Party and several student organisations to challenge Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged election-commission irregularities.

Why it matters

It shows how essential public transit can stay functional during large-scale civic unrest, affecting commuter mobility and protest logistics.
