Delhi Police equips protest-zone officers with body-worn cameras

Delhi Police has begun issuing body-cameras to officers deployed around protest sites and routes to the Election Commission office.

In response to allegations of misconduct during recent demonstrations, Delhi Police is supplying body-cameras to frontline officers stationed throughout New Delhi, especially those managing crowds near protest locations and the road to the Election Commission of India office. The cameras are intended to capture real-time footage of police-protester encounters, offering a factual record for investigations and helping resolve disputes.

Security measures have been heightened across New Delhi, Central Delhi and North Delhi, with extensive barricades and large deployments of police and paramilitary forces following protests against the Election Commission's SIR exercise. Complaints have spurred independent journalists to demand an FIR and access to CCTV footage, though no FIR has been filed yet. The police also issued an advisory urging media personnel to carry and visibly display organization-issued identity cards or PIB/DIP accreditation to avoid hindering law-enforcement operations.

Why it matters

Body-cameras aim to increase transparency and accountability in police handling of large protests in Delhi.
