Delhi Police moves to revoke Sharjeel Imam's interim bail over alleged media contact
The Delhi Police has asked the court to cancel Sharjeel Imam's seven-day interim bail, claiming he broke the condition that barred him from meeting journalists.
Delhi Police filed a petition seeking the revocation of Sharjeel Imam's interim bail, which was limited to seven days for a cousin's wedding and prohibited any media interaction. The police cite a circulating video that appears to show Imam speaking with journalists, describing the act as a deliberate violation of the bail conditions. Special Public Prosecutor Madhukar Pandey presented the plea, which will be considered by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai in Karkardooma.
Imam was detained in January 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and is alleged to have played a central intellectual role in the February 2020 communal riots in northeast Delhi that killed 53 people. A prior bail denial on July 5 referenced a Supreme Court order that had previously refused bail to Imam and co-accused Umar Khalid. The court noted that conflicting Supreme Court rulings on a separate case were pending before a larger bench.
