Delhi surveys over a thousand PG hostels, flags dozens for repair or demolition

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi inspected 1,252 paying-guest buildings, finding three unsafe structures and nine needing major repairs.

Following the tragic collapse of the Satya Niketan building, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi conducted a safety audit of 1,252 paying-guest facilities from September 7 to 9. Officials reported that 1,201 of these hostels appear structurally sound, but 39 need minor repairs and nine require major remediation. Three buildings were labeled dangerous, prompting demolition of one on site.

In addition, the civic body identified 26 framed structures taller than four stories for ongoing surveillance due to potential vulnerabilities. The survey will continue, alongside a broader crackdown that has already seen the demolition of 35 illegal or unsafe buildings across 12 zones and the sealing of several commercial premises.
