Delhi suspends mobile internet around eight protest sites on Saturday

The Union Home Ministry ordered mobile internet to be shut down within 500 metres of eight designated protest locations in Delhi from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday.

In response to a large-scale protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, the Union Home Ministry approved a directive, signed by Home secretary Govind Mohan, to suspend mobile internet within a 500-metre perimeter of eight sites in Delhi. The shutdown was enforced from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and applied to venues such as Chhatrasal Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex, Jasola Sports Complex, a community centre in Daulatpur, two centres in Chhawla, Jangli Ram Stadium, and Surajmal Stadium.

These locations had been designated as temporary jails for detaining protesters, including Supreme Court lawyers and Communist Party activists. Police requested the suspension to avoid disruptions to law and order, and residents in eastern Delhi reported experiencing the same connectivity restrictions. The order cited the need to prevent incitement to offenses and preserve public safety.

Why it matters

The internet shutdown could hinder communication for protesters and residents, raising concerns about civil liberties and public order.
