Delhi to bar non-BS-VI vehicles and tighten construction rules from November 1
The Delhi government announced that, starting November 1, vehicles not meeting BS-6 standards will be prohibited and construction activities will face new limits to curb winter air pollution.
Delhi's Winter Action Plan, effective from November 1 through February 28, will prohibit vehicles that do not meet BS-6 emission standards from entering the city, with enforcement tied to the Pollution Under Control Certificate and fuel availability. Construction and demolition work will be curtailed, and authorities will deploy AI tools to monitor sites, while encouraging half of the workforce to operate from home and offices to adopt staggered timings.
The government will also push cleaner mobility solutions, including electric buses, expanded Metro service, last-mile connectivity and car-pooling initiatives. Officials stress that collective effort is essential to safeguard residents' right to breathe during the winter months. The policy reflects an early and firm response to the seasonal rise in air pollution.
Why it matters
The restrictions target a major source of winter smog, aiming to protect public health and reduce traffic congestion in India's capital.
