Delhi to bar non-BS6 vehicles from NCR entering city for winter months
From November 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, Delhi will prohibit entry of vehicles that do not meet BS6 emission standards, affecting over one million cars from nearby NCR towns.
Delhi’s winter air-quality strategy includes a temporary ban, starting November 1, 2026 and lasting until January 31, 2027, on all vehicles registered outside the city that do not satisfy the BS6 emission norm. Transport department data suggest that over one million cars from the surrounding NCR districts—Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad—will be impacted, with many older BS3 and BS4 models prevalent in the fleet.
Approximately two lakh vehicles in Gurgaon and Faridabad, and more than four lakh each in Noida-Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, fail to meet the standard. To enforce the rule, authorities will deploy automatic number-plate recognition systems and assign around three hundred enforcement personnel to border checkpoints. The measure excludes electric and CNG vehicles and aims to curb pollution during the capital’s most vulnerable season.
Why it matters
The ban targets a major source of winter smog, affecting daily commuters and air quality in the national capital.
