Delhi to push back deadline for PM-Uday ownership applications after weak response

The Delhi government plans to extend the October 31 cut-off for residents of 1,511 unauthorised colonies to apply for ownership under the PM-Uday scheme, citing low uptake.

Delhi authorities intend to lengthen the application window for the PM-Uday programme after receiving just seven submissions through the civic portal, five of which were rejected for incomplete paperwork. The scheme, created in 2019 to grant legal ownership to over four million residents of 1,511 unauthorised colonies, was shifted to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi following amendments by the Centre. Although the Delhi Development Authority waived several fees and the MCD cut charges to 25% of the amount due, uptake remains tepid.

Recent relaxations announced by Union housing minister Manohar Lal permit regularisation without approved layout plans and on an “as-is, where-is” basis, aiming to simplify the process. A public notice had warned that no conveyance deed would be issued for applications after October 31, but officials now consider extending the deadline. The move reflects the government's effort to encourage more residents to regularise their properties.

Why it matters

Extending the deadline could enable millions of Delhi residents to obtain legal ownership of their homes.
