Delivery rider killed by high-speed kite string on Delhi-Meerut Expressway
A 25-year-old delivery worker died after a Chinese synthetic kite string sliced his throat while riding above 80 km/h on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
On a Saturday afternoon, 25-year-old delivery agent Raviraj was riding his motorcycle at more than 80 km/h on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway when a Chinese-made synthetic kite string, known as manjha, caught his throat near Media House. The string, coated with glass or other sharp substances, sliced his neck, leading to massive blood loss. His pillion passenger, Naresh, managed to bring the bike to a stop, and passersby carried the injured rider to Max Hospital in Vaishali, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
ACP Indirapuram Suryabali Maurya said the police received a 112 call about the incident and highlighted the ongoing illegal trade of the banned material. Recent raids in Ghaziabad have resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of hundreds of rolls, yet the trade persists. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has previously called deaths caused by such strings murder, and the National Green Tribunal has urged nationwide enforcement of the ban.
Why it matters
The death underscores the ongoing danger of illegal synthetic kite strings and challenges enforcement of existing bans.
