Dell Foundation's $42 million Rebuild Texas Fund Restores Thousands of Homes After Harvey
Michael and Susan Dell helped launch the Rebuild Texas Fund, which contributed $42 million and supported the repair or rebuilding of 3,740 homes in the three years after Hurricane Harvey.
When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas coast, Michael Dell and his wife Susan Dell partnered with the OneStar Foundation to establish the Rebuild Texas Fund. Their foundation contributed $42 million, and the fund ultimately gathered over $100 million from a broad donor base of more than 33,000 individuals. Focused on health, housing, education, workforce, transportation, and small-business recovery, the initiative supported 290 projects across 41 counties.
Over three years, it helped repair or rebuild 3,740 homes, provided health services to 265,842 people, supplied materials to 3,724 teachers, and enabled 1,411 businesses to resume operations. The effort also equipped emergency medical teams and restored community facilities such as a Little League field, reaching an estimated 2.1 million Texans.
Why it matters
The fund demonstrates how private philanthropy can mobilize large-scale, long-term disaster recovery for affected communities.
