Delta captain becomes ill mid-flight, forces emergency landing at LAX
A Delta pilot fell seriously ill while en route, prompting an emergency diversion to Los Angeles where the aircraft taxied to a gate before the captain was taken to a hospital.
While operating a Detroit-to-Boston service, the Delta captain experienced a severe health issue and informed controllers that he needed to land and seek hospital treatment. Air-traffic control directed the aircraft to the Yankee Two exit for the quickest gate access at Los Angeles International Airport. After landing, the captain was taken off the plane in Detroit and flown to a hospital, while a standby pilot assumed command and flew the remainder of the route, resulting in a 90-minute delay on arrival in Boston.
Delta issued a statement apologizing to passengers but withheld specifics about the captain’s condition. Former military and commercial pilot Matthew “Whiz” Buckley explained that standard protocol requires the incapacitated pilot to hand over communication duties and that diverting to the nearest airport is the safest course of action. The airline confirmed the sick captain deplaned in Detroit and a substitute pilot completed the flight.
