Democrat testifies she feels ashamed of party’s immigration policy after son’s fatal crash

Elizabeth Carter, who identifies as a lifelong Democrat, appeared before a congressional committee and expressed shame over her party’s handling of immigration after her son, William Micah Carter, and his wife, Jennifer Lower, were killed in a late-November collision with a semi-truck driven by Rajinder Kumar, an undocumented immigrant holding a California commercial driver’s license. The couple, returning from a wedding reception in Oregon, also lost their cat, Bert, in the crash.

Carter criticized Democratic opposition to stronger immigration enforcement, referencing the admission of ten million migrants during the Biden administration. Rep. Brad Knott (R-N.C.) questioned her, suggesting that stricter law enforcement might have prevented the tragedy. He highlighted that Democratic committee members have not called for the removal of illegal drivers. The hearing coincided with ICE’s launch of a tip line aimed at uncovering CDL fraud among illegal immigrants, a move announced by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
