Democratic candidate's low attendance record in Iowa House draws criticism

State legislative data reveal that former Democratic Rep. Christina Bohannan failed to attend 348 of 773 floor votes in 2022, amounting to about 45% of the total. Her absences covered a range of measures, from protections for sexual-abuse victims and support for volunteer firefighters to legislation affecting Iowa's dairy sector, 911 services and juvenile-justice reform. Despite these gaps, she has repeatedly urged elected officials to be present and engage with constituents.

The National Republican Congressional Committee seized on the record, labeling her a "no-show" while she pursues a seat in Iowa's 1st Congressional District. Bohannan is challenging Republican incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks in a race the Cook Political Report deems a toss-up. She continued to receive the state legislator's salary and per-diem during the campaign period.
