Democratic congressional hopeful Marni von Wilpert books fundraiser at San Diego’s LGBTQ nightclub

Marni von Wilpert, the Democratic candidate for California’s 48th district, will host a campaign fundraiser at the Gossip Grill, a San Diego venue known for adult-themed LGBTQ events.

Democratic contender Marni von Wilpert is set to hold a campaign fundraiser on Thursday at the Gossip Grill, a San Diego establishment famed for its adult-oriented LGBTQ programming such as “Fi---r me Fridays” and “Cabaret Drag Brunch Pride Extravaganza.” Wilpert, who came out as bisexual a few years ago, lists LGBTQ+ rights among her primary campaign issues and pledges to advance the Equality Act at the federal level.

Republican National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Christian Martinez denounced the venue, labeling Wilpert’s platform as a “perverted agenda” that allegedly pushes hormone treatments on children. Wilpert’s record includes defending LGBTQ-affirming books in San Diego public libraries and expanding Pride displays, actions that earned endorsements from Equality California, Equality PAC, the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign.

She has not responded to inquiries about the fundraiser’s location. The event highlights the cultural and political clash surrounding LGBTQ issues in the district’s upcoming race.

Why it matters

The fundraiser spotlights how LGBTQ advocacy and cultural venues are becoming flashpoints in a competitive congressional race.
