Democratic engineer uses town hall to spotlight Texas Railroad Commission challenges
State Rep. Jon Rosenthal held a Laredo town hall to explain underground CO₂ injection, wastewater issues and the Texas Railroad Commission as he seeks its seat.
State Rep. Jon Rosenthal, a Democrat and former oil-field engineer, hosted a town-hall in Laredo to outline the Texas Railroad Commission’s role and highlight environmental concerns tied to oil production. He explained that underground disposal of carbon-dioxide-laden wastewater in the Permian Basin has been linked to seismic activity, and he addressed related topics such as data-center energy use, flaring, and abandoned wells that leak.
Attendees, including high-school student Chris Benavides, retiree Lucy Quintanilla, and city council member Melissa Cigarroa, posed probing questions, while a sociology professor noted the commission’s limited staff and budget. Rosenthal’s campaign pits him against Bo French, a Republican whose platform centers on cultural issues rather than energy policy. By emphasizing technical knowledge, Rosenthal hopes to persuade voters about the commission’s importance in overseeing nearly half of U.S. oil output.
Why it matters
Voters need to understand the Railroad Commission’s impact on Texas’s oil industry and environmental safety.
