Since her 2023 appointment by President Biden, Anna Gomez has been the only Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission, often speaking out against decisions she says infringe First Amendment rights. Her term expired at the end of June, but she remains in a carryover role that could last until 2027 unless the Senate confirms a successor. Gomez has criticized the FCC’s early renewal reviews of Disney’s broadcast licenses and its handling of the Paramount-Skydance merger, arguing they reflect partisan overreach.
She recently praised Disney for suing the agency, urging other broadcasters not to capitulate. Senate leaders, including Maria Cantwell and Ben Ray Luján, have urged her reconfirmation, and even Republican figures such as Ted Cruz have defended her stance on free speech. The commission awaits confirmation of Danielle Thumann, a Republican nominee, and the President has not indicated whether another Democrat will be appointed to restore a full five-member panel.
