Democratic lawmakers push FAA for fresh environmental review of Amazon drone hub near Boston
Four Democratic members of Congress asked the FAA to redo its environmental analysis before approving Amazon’s Prime Air hub in Westborough, Massachusetts.
A quartet of Democratic lawmakers — Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren and Representatives Jim McGovern and Lori Trahan — have formally asked the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct a fresh environmental review of Amazon’s planned Prime Air drone delivery hub in Westborough, Massachusetts. Their letter to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford highlights resident concerns over noise pollution, health and safety risks, and privacy implications.
The request follows broader legal challenges, including a recent lawsuit by 15 states and a Texas county over the FAA’s earlier, broad environmental assessment for commercial drone deliveries. The agency had previously issued a review that did not require site-specific analysis, allowing operators to launch fleets without additional studies. The FAA indicated it would respond to the congressional inquiry, while Amazon has not provided comment.
Why it matters
The review could delay or reshape a major drone delivery project, affecting local communities and the future of commercial drone use.
