Democratic leaders urged to boost funding for Scott Colom’s Mississippi Senate bid

Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson, the state’s only Democratic representative in Washington, called on national Democratic groups to pour more money into Scott Colom’s Senate race versus Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith. Thompson blamed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for failing to capitalize on what he described as a “golden opportunity.” Colom told a local outlet that Democratic leaders are finally recognizing Mississippi’s relevance and that intensified support could flip the seat in November.

The DSCC’s spokesperson highlighted Colom’s ability to win tough contests and noted his challenge to Hyde-Smith. Although the DSCC’s recent investment plan omitted Mississippi, both Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Schumer have visited the state and hosted fundraisers for Colom, including a recent event in New York City.
