Democratic primary in New Hampshire’s 1st District remains too close to call

In the tightly contested Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, Stefany Shaheen and Maura Sullivan remain deadlocked, each claiming brief leads as results trickle in. Shaheen, the daughter of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, emphasizes Medicare for All, first-time homebuyer tax credits, and ICE reform, while Sullivan highlights her Marine service, a stint as an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and a health-tech executive role.

The race opened after Rep. Chris Pappas announced a Senate bid, leaving the House seat vacant; he previously won re-election with 54.0% of the vote over Republican Russell Prescott. Eight other Democrats, including state legislator Carleigh Beriont, also entered the contest, with Beriont capturing roughly 20% of the vote. Although Sullivan out-raised Shaheen, the latter leads by about two points after Tuesday night, buoyed by her mother’s endorsement and local ties to Portsmouth.
