Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul el Sayed seeks to channel Hasan Piker's followers into his campaign

Abdul el Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, told Stephen A. Smith on SiriusXM that he intends to offer Twitch personality Hasan Piker’s millions of followers a “pathway” into his electoral movement. He said the strategy will highlight points of agreement while clearly marking issues where he diverges from the streamer’s views. Although Piker has faced criticism for past antisemitic and pro-Hamas comments, el Sayed refused to categorically disavow him, pointing to Piker’s later retractions, including a controversial 9/11 remark.

The outreach occurs amid a competitive Senate contest, with Republican nominee Mike Rogers targeting Jewish voters. Democratic senators Cory Booker, Jacky Rosen, Elissa Slotkin, and Jon Ossoff have publicly called for the party to distance itself from Piker, but el Sayed remains firm on his approach. His campaign is also hiring a Jewish community liaison and has issued apologies to Jewish Democrats for earlier statements perceived as sympathetic to a synagogue attacker.
