Democratic Senate hopeful frames Second Amendment as right to a musket

Democratic Senate candidate Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed said the Second Amendment guarantees equal access to a musket and questioned the public availability of high-capacity firearms.

At a Midland, Michigan town hall, Democratic Senate contender Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed described the Second Amendment as protecting “equal rights to a musket,” emphasizing originalist interpretation of the Constitution. He contrasted the historical context of muskets with today’s firearms, arguing that certain guns built for mass killing should not be publicly accessible. El-Sayed called for additional red-flag measures and highlighted the priority of protecting children over unrestricted gun ownership.

He cited the recent Silver Rail Elementary School incident, noting that a father of two, Kaylub Giamanco, entered the building with a concealed handgun and neutralized the shooter. The remarks blend constitutional theory with calls for tighter gun-control policies in schools.
