Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico launches faith-based food drive in Texas

James Talarico, the Democratic contender for the Texas Senate seat, arrived in a black van at the Frederick Douglass Human Services and Justice Center on Kiest Boulevard West to launch the “Love Thy Neighbor Grocery Drive,” a food-collection campaign for residents struggling with rising food costs. The initiative, inspired by the biblical command to love one’s neighbor, is presented as a direct response to Republican fundraising events in Dallas.

Talarico, who studied at the University of Texas and Harvard Graduate School of Education, previously worked as a teacher and Presbyterian preacher and describes his politics as rooted in biblical Christianity rather than partisan labels. He is campaigning against Republican Ken Paxton and has faced criticism from Donald Trump, who has labeled him with derogatory nicknames. Supporters like volunteer Lory Westbrook say the drive demonstrates a practical alternative to partisan conflict, aiming to address the hardships caused by high prices and political polarization.
