Democratic Socialist David Morales Challenges Mayor Smiley in Providence Mayoral Primary

In the upcoming Democratic primary, David Morales, a three-term Rhode Island state representative, is challenging Mayor Brett Smiley for Providence’s top executive office. Morales frames the race around a housing crisis, arguing that the city’s lack of rent-stabilization—exacerbated by Smiley’s veto of a council-approved 4 percent rent-cap—needs urgent legislative action.
