Democratic states sue USPS to halt Trump's mail-voting restrictions for midterms

Approximately twenty-five Democratic-controlled states have lodged a fresh lawsuit against the United States Postal Service, contending that President Donald Trump’s executive order curbing mail voting for the upcoming midterm elections exceeds legal authority. The action follows a Supreme Court ruling that deemed a prior Democratic challenge premature, and it arrives just days after the administration released a rule mandating federal sign-off on ballot-envelope designs and voter lists.

Officials overseeing elections warn that the rule cannot be applied in time for the first wave of mail ballots scheduled for next week. New York Attorney General Letitia James, speaking for the coalition of attorneys general, called the federal move an interference with state election preparations. A separate district judge, Indira Talwani, previously blocked the order and has not yet acted on the administration’s request to lift her injunction. The dispute underscores ongoing battles over mail voting, a practice Trump has repeatedly targeted since returning to office.
