Democrats Capture Butler County House Seat After Nearly Three Decades of GOP Rule
Brandon Dukes narrowly beat Republican Scott Timko in Pennsylvania’s Butler County House District 12, ending a 26-year Republican hold.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro reported early Wednesday that Democrat Brandon Dukes flipped the Butler County House District 12, defeating Republican Scott Timko by a margin of 88 votes with more than 95 percent of ballots counted. The seat had been under Republican control for 26 years, first won by Daryl Metcalf in 1998. Dukes, who works in commercial construction for a national bank and was endorsed by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said the victory breaks a near-30-year red streak.
He will complete the term of former Rep. Stephenie Scialabba, who stepped down to care for her young son. The win temporarily gives House Democrats a two-seat edge, though the race remains open pending provisional and overseas ballots. Timko has declined to concede, and the district remains heavily Republican-leaning, with voters outnumbering Democrats by almost two to one. Democratic campaign officials attribute the upset to voter fatigue with Republican policies on wages and cost of living.
Why it matters
The upset signals shifting voter sentiment in a traditionally Republican stronghold, affecting state legislative balance.
