Democrats demand resignation of HHS chief amid spate of food recalls
The Democratic Party is urging Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to step down as multiple food items are recalled nationwide.
Amid a wave of food safety alerts—including contaminated iceberg lettuce, jalapeños, granola, salmon, ricotta cheese and a Seattle-baked sourdough loaf suspected of containing metal shards—the Democratic Party’s official X account has called for the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The account, tied to former Vice President Kamala Harris, also cautioned that frozen blueberries might cause death.
The Food and Drug Administration, under HHS jurisdiction, is monitoring the various recalls. Kennedy has defended the Trump administration’s response and urged Congress to grant the FDA greater authority and resources. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blamed the recalls on a philosophy shared by Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Kennedy that weakens federal oversight, while Senator Ruben Gallego accused Republicans of worsening public health. The controversy threatens Kennedy’s Make America Healthy Again agenda.
Why it matters
The calls for the HHS secretary’s resignation highlight political pressure over food safety and federal oversight.
