Democrats expand list of target House seats as midterms approach
With a month left before the midterm elections, House Democrats have added eight more districts to their list of seats they aim to flip, all rated Republican by the Cook Political Report.
One month before the 2024 midterm elections, House Democrats have broadened their target map by eight additional districts, each classified as "likely" or "solid" Republican by the Cook Political Report. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee now considers 66 districts to be in play, double the number previously identified. DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene argued that the party is advancing into heavily Republican territory as voter frustration with GOP promises rises.
Historical trends show the White House party typically loses House seats in midterms, a pattern Democrats hope to reverse. Republicans maintain a sizable cash advantage, with the NRCC holding $89 million compared with the DCCC’s $76 million, and the RNC’s $125 million dwarfing the DNC’s $16.9 million. Nonetheless, Democrats lead by 8.3 points in the latest generic congressional ballot aggregate from one outlet.
Why it matters
The expanding Democratic target map could reshape control of the U.S. House after the upcoming midterm elections.
