Democrats Press DOJ for Explanation After Fraud Case Against Gautam Adani Was Dropped
Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to explain why the Justice Department dismissed a fraud and bribery case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani.
In August, a New York federal judge dismissed a fraud and bribery indictment against Gautam Adani at the request of prosecutors, even though the judge flagged “irregularities” in the unusual move. The case was abandoned after Adani’s new legal team, led by Robert Giuffra Jr, presented a $10 billion investment proposal for the United States. Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have now written to Attorney General Todd Blanche, demanding answers about possible involvement of Trump-linked figures such as Boris Epshteyn and Donald Trump Jr. in the decision to drop the case.
Their letter also asks for a list of DOJ employees present when the investment offer was made, the terms of that offer, and any communications between DOJ staff and the Trump advisers. The senators set a response deadline of 5 October and noted concerns about political influence and special treatment within the department. The Justice Department has not yet replied.
