Democrats Press Health Officials Over Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Trump-aligned Grower

On Aug 13, Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., requesting a detailed account of the government's response to a cyclospora outbreak linked to Taylor Farms, a major produce supplier that has donated to Trump-aligned political groups. The senator highlighted cuts to food-borne illness surveillance and timing of donations that coincided with regulatory actions favorable to the company, such as a delayed FDA traceability rule.

HHS stated that once the FDA was confident the outbreak stemmed from Taylor Farms products, it engaged directly with the firm and that political contributions do not affect outbreak investigations. Taylor Farms rejected any implication of undue influence and affirmed its cooperation with trace-back efforts. The inquiry follows similar letters from Rep. Robert Garcia and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, as well as public criticism from Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, amid a nationwide outbreak that has sickened thousands and caused two deaths in Michigan.
